Tom Chigbo

In 2010, Tom became Cambridge University’s first black Students’ Union President, representing 20,000 students and successfully campaigning for the university to fund a Student Advice Service and multimillion pound sports centre. After graduating from Cambridge with a degree in Geography, Tom completed an MA in Community Organising at Queen Mary University of London.

Tom now works as a Community Organiser with Citizens UK, an alliance of faith, education and civil society organisations which take public action for the common good. His role involves building relationships across diverse communities, developing the leadership of ordinary people and campaigning for social justice.

Tom began his career at Citizens UK with Money Mentors, an innovative community-led peer-to-peer financial literacy campaign, before progressing to Borough Organiser for the London Borough of Lambeth and working on a variety of campaigns. He also directed CitySafe, an initiative that has rebuilt relationships between young people, small businesses and the Metropolitan Police by opening over 600 safe havens across the capital. Tom launched Leeds Citizens in July 2015.
