The Ceremony

On Thursday 11th July 2013, ten outstanding Stars were revealed at a glittering ceremony at the House of Commons.

This year’s host, David Lammy MP, was followed on stage by former Rare Rising Star, George Mpanga, and this year’s keynote speaker, Trevor Phillips OBE, who shared the importance of the stars boldly proclaiming their achievements in order to bring about lasting change.

The audience of senior business and community leaders, friends and family, young people and press, heard of the ways in which the top ten had fought to defy stereotypes, push boundaries and shine brightly as high achievers and outstanding role models.

This year’s Number One Rare Rising Star was named as Oxford University DPhil student, Melvin Mezue, whose work investigates the way that the brain processes pain, with the aim of developing new treatments for chronic pain syndromes. As well as delivering several national and international conference presentations, some of Melvin’s research work has been exhibited at the Science Museum (‘Pain Less – The Future of Relief’) and showcased on the BBC’s One Show. As well as his academic achievements, Melvin has also co-founded a youth-led media company and was President of the Oxford University Africa society.

Melvin headed a list of students that included an Olympic bronze medallist, a global performing and visual artist, and a young man who survived prison and torture in his homeland before finding refuge in the UK.
