Travers Smith Thrive Programme

In October 2023, Travers Smith, a leading full service corporate law firm in London, will be holding a four day in-person work experience scheme for Year 12 students from socially mobile backgrounds. This will be hosted at their office in central London.

On the Travers Smith Thrive Scheme, you will learn about the world of law and business. You will get the chance to use your presentation skills, learn how to negotiate, and improve your interview technique and CV. But that’s not all, you will also have the chance to get involved in a whole range of activities to help you fulfil your potential.

You will have the opportunity to learn more about the legal profession. However, a law firm needs much more than lawyers for it to function. A law firm also needs departments such as Accounts, IT, Human Resources, and Business Development and Marketing. On the Thrive Scheme, you will learn that there are lots of different career paths available both within and outside the legal sector.

The Thrive Scheme is an excellent opportunity for you to get a taste of what it’s like to work in a professional office environment and put your skills to the test. If the Thrive Scheme sounds like something that you would enjoy, make sure you complete the application form below!

 

How to apply


To be eligible for the Travers Smith Thrive Scheme you must:

  • Be in Year 12
  • Meet at least one of the following criteria:
    • Being eligible for free school meals in the last six years (i.e. pupil premium); or
    • Growing up in a household in which no parent or guardian attended university; or
    • o Experiencing other forms of disadvantage, such as spending time in local authority care
  • Be able to attend Travers Smith's office in central London for the duration of the week.

The Travers Smith Thrive scheme will run from Monday 23rd October – Thursday 26th October 2023. It will take place at Travers Smith's office in central London. Participants will be expected to attend the Travers Smith office for all four days. Phone interviews for the Travers Smith Thrive Scheme will take place on Monday 2nd October. Applicants will be expected to be available for a phone call on that day if they are selected for interview.

Participants will receive £350 compensation for participating in the Travers Smith Thrive Scheme. This will be paid in October 2023.

  • Make sure that the firm complies with the Solicitors’ Accounts Rules and money laundering rules
  • Deal with invoices which are payments that need to be made by and to the firm
  • Look after where money in the firm goes

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING

  • Help the firm to attract potential clients
  • Work with the legal departments to strategically deliver on their business plans
  • Produce marketing materials about what work the firm does and has undertaken
  • Manage and update the firm's website and social media channels
  • Support the firm's practices and lawyers on formal and informal pitch and bid opportunities for new mandates
  • Organise both internal and client events for the firm

RESEARCH CENTRE

  • Look after legal resources
  • Keep lawyers updated with changes in the law
  • Help lawyers with legal research
  • Undertake separate research for the firm’s internal knowledge systems

I.T.

  • Look after technology infrastructure throughout the firm
  • Fix any IT related problems
  • Provide IT training
  • Help lawyers with IT related work for clients
  • Build software systems and repairing hardware, including in-house solutions and AI.
